Assistant Conductor for Puccini's Madama Butterfly Opera
Programme Dates 29 May - 8 June 2024
The assistant conductor at the Covent Garden Opera Festival and Academy will:
- Rehearse with the orchestra (minimum 15 minutes for each Conductor but it could be more). From the discretion of the Faculty, assistant conductors will be asked to conduct piano rehearsals, orchestra only or orchestra and singers or selected sections in the Dress Rehearsals.
- Rehearse with the singers with piano and orchestra.
- Rehearse the Choir.
- Be ready to step in as a cover conductor if needed to conduct the whole Opera or one act in one of the performances.
- Assistant Conductors will have the possibility to rehearse extracts of the Opera not only in rehearsals with the orchestra and singers but also in the three dress rehearsals of Madama Butterfly Opera at St John’s Smith Square on 7 and 8 June 2024
- Learn and improve your skills on how to conduct an Opera, learn how to accompany singers with an orchestra.
- Rehearse selected excerpts in the dress rehearsal.
- Learn and work with the vocal faculty on how to coach and support singers.
- Learn how a complete Opera production works.
- Develop your skills as an assistant conductor, know how to give notes to singers and conductors, and how to devise complex rehearsal schedules.
Early applications will be given priority
Selected conductors who take part in the course could be asked to conduct future concerts of the Covent Garden Opera Festival or be invited as guest conductors in the 2024-2025, and 2025-2026 seasons of the London City Philharmonic.

A maximum of 3 Assistant Conductors will be selected for the 2 Opera performances.
There is no application fee.
After the evaluation process of all candidates, successful applicants will be notified via email no later than 9 April and will be asked to pay the tuition fee no later than 16 April 2024.
