Opera Programme

Programme Dates 29 May - 8 June 2024
The Opera Programme of the Covent Garden Opera Festival has been created for students, emerging Opera singers and professionals looking to obtain performance experience.
 
  • Rehearsals with the orchestra and piano: 29 May – 8 June 2024
  • Daily rehearsals with piano: morning 10:30-13:30, afternoon 15:00-19:00
  • Opportunity to record your main aria with the orchestra
  • Opportunity to sing the principal role or cover role of Madama Butterfly at St John’s Smith Square on 7 and 8 June 2024
  • 1 concert with piano (free choice of repertoire in consultation with the Faculty) at St James Paddington on 6 June 2024
  • Music agents will attend the Opera performances of Madama Butterfly and the concert at St James Paddington (this could be an opportunity to be noticed and signed up by an agent).
  • Individual vocal coaching

After the evaluation process of all candidates, successful applicants will be notified via email no later than 9 April.  
Difference between singing the Principal Role and singing the Cover Role
 
Principal Role
    • Performance: The principal singer is responsible for performing the role during scheduled performances. 
    • The principal singer participates in intensive rehearsals to prepare for their performance, working closely with the conductor, director and the other cast members.
Cover Role (Cover Singer or understudy) 
    • A cover singer or understudy is a backup performer who learns and rehearses a specific principal role but does not perform it unless the primary singer is unable to do so due to illness, injury, or any other unforeseen circumstance.
    • Rehearsal: Cover singers attend rehearsals alongside the principal cast and rehearse with piano and orchestra, even though they may not perform in all rehearsals. This helps them become familiar with the production and their role.
    • Performance Opportunity: If the principal singer cannot perform, the cover singer takes their place, allowing the show to go on without significant disruption.

Principal Roles

The principal Role fee for Cio-Cio San is £900 British pounds. The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April, for instalments please enquiry. 

The principal Role fee for Pinkerton, Suzuki & Sharpless is £600 British pounds.
The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April, for instalments please enquiry. 

The principal Role fee for Goro is £500 British pounds.
The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April, for instalments please enquiry.

Cover Roles


The cover Role tuition fee for Cio-Cio San is £600 British pounds.
The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April.

The cover Role tuition fee for Pinkerton, Suzuki & Shaprless is £400 British pounds.
The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April.

The cover Role tuition fee for Goro is £300 British pounds.
The tuition fee is to be paid no later than 30 April.
